Amazon Sucks

Amazon is punishing people who order items and choose free shipping. I've been seeing the same behavior for several orders now and so I'm convinced that it's not a fluke. I'm convinced that they are intentionally delaying shipments on orders where I have selected free shipping. In every single case, all items are reported to be in stock, and sold/shipped by Amazon. So there is no way for them to blame any "partner". In the most recent case, I ordered several books, that were all in stock, and all available for shipment within 24 hours (so their website indicated). I placed my order on January 8. And now, I've learned that they plan to ship (not deliver - but merely to ship) my order on February 26. And still, today, every single item is in stock. Please people, try hard to not use Amazon. They're clearly employing an untold number of manipulative schemes that do NOT help the customer.

It's no wonder that Yahoo Finance reports that Amazon's quarterly earnings growth (yoy) is -36%.

You know, my dad has said the same thing about his book orders. It appears to be only with books though, as I haven't had any such difficulty with my other orders.

I just ordered a pot on Amazon. They told me the earliest it could possibly get here was tomorrow or as late as early Feb... it got here today... looks like they have no trouble with cookware.

I googled this problem and found your website. I wanted to add that I have had the most frustrating experience with Amazon and their shipping. I ordered a child's car seat over two months ago. I originally selected free shipping but was upgraded to one-day shipping after frustrating delays. The website has the item "in stock" almost everyday since I have ordered it. Today (11/10/07), I received yet another email asking me to approve new ship date. The only reason why I have stuck with the order is because it is the cheapest price I can find anywhere anytime. What is the deal with their shipping and availability?

What a nightmare I am having--ordered a nice toshiba 42" LCD HD TV. Took two weeks via a really poor shipper--Eagle. The drunk delivery person dropped the TV off the truck and tried to deliver anyway. He claimed it was not damaged, I said no thanks. Short story is the shipper tried to say it was delivered and we are still in dispute with the credit card company. Amazon is acting hands off, even though it is their sale and not some named third party. My advice is to avoid Amazon for this type of purchase--I should have known better, but I had good luck with smaller purchases.

I went to the Amazon site from a link on DealMac.com
The item I wanted was the Sanyo Xati HD 7000 (brown) camcorder/camera.
It was priced at $299.99... free shipping.
I thought it was a good buy (a Great Buy, actually) so I clicked to "buy it now" and the price was listed at $329.99 in the cart. What!? That's $30.00 more than they advertised. I clicked on the browser back button... and the price was then $379.99!! I tried to refresh the page, but what the heck, it was still listed at $379.99.

What kind of price-gouging, product switching, price-fixing thing is going on here?
Isn't against the law to advertise a product at one price, then sell it at a higher price? Isn't that a criminal offense? And this is over the internet... probably across several state lines!

This is my first time trying to buy something from Amazon.com and now I see what I've been reading and hearing here and there... that Amazon is okay.. but kinda shifty in it's own way. I now see why. I will be sure to relate my Amazon experience to any and all.

I complained to a friend and he says he doesn't order on Amazon anymore because of the constant shipping delays, and now it looks like some kind of thrift store/flea market, what with all the ads and "buy used" stuff... at the same price as the "new" stuff and the constant ads. In fact the page that I originally went to (the one with the price at 299.99) said that people who bought the Sanyo HD700 in brown at $299.99 also bought a ...yep, Sanyo HD700 in silver... at $379.99! Yeah. Right. I shoulda figured out right then that Amazon is run by idiots thinking that their customers are also idiots.

I called their help line and got nowhere and sent an email, and got an email back which basically said that they could do nothing. Man, are they so right. They can't do anything because they don't know anything.

And now they're in collusion with scalpers. They will promise you something. Then at the last minute tell you they don't have it after all. Forcing you to go to a scalper. The scalper using their "warehousing services". And the item ships direct from amazon, and the scalper & amazon both make more money off you than amazon ever could have by selling you the one item direct.

I realized the same problem every time I have ordered books through amazon. I always chose the free shipping and they always took about a month to arrive.

I have had it with Amazon. We tried to sell on Amazon and it has been a disaster. You can read the rest of that story on my blog.

I ordered a book from Amazon yesterday. This book was in stock but said they would not be able to ship it out until Jan 28. So I tried to cancel my order but Amazon claimed they could not cancel my order.

Anonymous said...

They almost certainly delay them in some way or another. But it's not clear how they decide what to delay and what not to delay or why. I mean, I've ordered with free shipping before and gotten the package 2 days later, and I've ordered with free shipping and had it take 2 - 3 weeks. Regardless, as they say, you get what you pay for.

Amazon are awful especially for International orders. I ordered a book that was to be shipped from the US to Europe and paid extra for fast shipping. I was told at the time of ordering that it would arrive between 9-15 days. Then I get a confirmation email after I paid saying that it actually wouldn't be shipped for a further MONTH and then it would take a further 25 days to arrive! (a total wait of almost two months). I tried to cancel it straight away under "my account", but even though it's not being shipped out for a month I cannot cancel, since it is being "processed". Therefore the whole cancel feature seems utter crap and non existent. But maybe this shoddy service is just for international orders?

Customer service is a joke - 3 emails, 2 weeks, and still no reply. The number for international buyers doesn't work.

If you have any other choice avoid Amazon, even if it means paying a bit extra because going with them will cost more in time and money anyway!

Amazon Sucks!

I ordered about $500.00 in books from them in December. When I got to reading one of the books, it was missing the sticker that contains an internet code. I called Amazon, and they said that since it had been more than 30 days, tough shit for me. I normally buy about $2000.00 in books each year from Amazon.

I will never buy another book from them again!

I had the same problem here. I order two a studio mixer and a USB Music Port. Anyways I got the USB Music Port within the same week of ordering but, they toke me for the runaround on the studio mixer. It was going on two months with it on the site saying in order but the email telling theres none with them. So I just canceled the order and said I'll stick with Ebay!!! That will be my first and last time ordering from Amazon.

I too have had it with Amazon. Over the years I have ordered a lot of merchandise from them. Used to when you chose the free shipping, you order would still arrive within 5 days even if it said 8-10. I placed and order on April 28, 2008 for two items and chose free shipping. Now they are saying as of May 2nd that only today was the carrier notified to pickup the items for shipping (5 full days after the order was placed). Well, we all know that they will not pick up on weekends. So now they are projecting a delivery date of May 20th. Correct me if I'm wrong but that is way beyond their policy. And everything was in stock when the order was placed. Now I am mad....one of the items was a coffee pot to replace mine which quit working. I will never place another order with Amazon. I have used their free shipping many times and never had to wait this long.

Bought call of duty 4 from them (a video game). Great deal. $34.99 when other places are $59.99.

Well they shipped it to me. I checked the address, they forgot to put my apartment number. Thats cool, no not really. Contacted usps, they cant do anything... called their customer service. He said "we can re-ship it" i told him... it was a special deal, it's back up to $59.99 on your web site. He assured me, no problem, call back once we recieve it.

Okay. I call back today after they recieve it. Here's the line I get "Just re-order it". I say to them... actually, this is the whole deal, i talked to the previous guy, he said you would re-send it to me. Nope. Talking to their customer service is fun. Apparently I am a liar.

I can see saying "sorry we can't do it", but blame me for their mistake? I'm not just an unsatisfied customer due to their problems, I am of the opinion "FUCK amazon".

Never going to buy anything from them again, and will encourage everyone i meet not to either.

Yes, Amazon purposefully delays "free" shipments to force repeat buyers to upgrade and pay for shipping in future orders.

I've literally waited months for books that claim to be in stock and available.

Simply the worst customer service available, with non-English speaking people editing form emails incoherently.

I've switched to bn.com (Barnes & Noble) for most of my book orders and am much happier now. (There are several other useful book buying sites that Google can lead you to.)

AMAZON SUCKS!!!!! I just went to Amazon to download a cd and I paid for a cd that can't even download to my pc. It seems that enough people would be going to their website every day to download music that they could get at least that much right. They are a bunch of fuc^&%$ idiots!!!! i just paid 7.99 for a cd that can't even be downloaded to my pc. BEWARE!!!! spend your money anywhere but Amazon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I've placed two orders with Amazon recently (camping equipment and books, respectively). In both cases, I chose the free super saver shipping, and in both cases Amazon sat on the order for exactly a week before sending them out. Based on that I would say that it's definitely a customer-unfriendly policy to play games and deliberately delay the shipment in order to coax people into paying for expedited shipping. I'll be shopping elsewhere next time.

Amazon use to have decent shipping and they use to show a (ships within 24 hours) on in stock items. They no longer show it any more because even if the item is in stock they delay shipping it to frustrate you into buying Prime. Amazon is run by a bunch of douchebags. It's gone down hill ever since they have started to pimp out Amazon Primer every chance they get.

Anonymous said...

I've just placed 10 orders in as many days, for all sorts of products, and they are all taking about 5 days to ship. The ones that have not yet shipped give an "estimated ship date" about five days out from the order date. Orders placed with 3rd party sellers shipped next day. This is done on purpose, Amazon is screwing its customers over to try and force them to buy "Prime", the overpriced sub-prime con.

I had to order a math book for a college math class. It was the WRONG edition! But what could I do, it was 2 weeks into the class already but my instructor was really cool. He looked over it and said it didn't really make a difference. If you do buy from Amazon, be warned and get a lot of lube and condoms, because you're gonna be fucked in the ass HARD!

The solution. I use bigwords (dot) com and half-dot-com. I get it 10x faster and none of this "it will ship on the 18th of this month but will arrive on the 26th of next month" bullshit.

Amazon really does suck. No one who lives in Alaska should do ANY business with them at all. Everytime I try to order it is always something about 'not shipping to Alaska'. Duh, we are part of the United States of

Fool me once, shame on you said...

This is insane. I was under the impression that Amazon was a reliable source for books. Now I wouldn't order electronics from them however books were their turf. Apparently Not.
On Septermber 26th I ordered a single book that was in stock and ready for shipment within 24 hours. It shipped 2 days later on the 28th, this i can tolerate.

I understood they were being shifty with their free shipment service so I went for International Expidited service (at an additional cost) and it was supposed to arrive within three weeks (which i felt was stretching the limits).
Anyway the estimated date of arrival was yesterday and as expected, no arrival.

Upon mailing them i received a response saying they will not send an additonal package just yet as both might arrive and then I will need to handle returning one.

I was then asked to wait "several more weeks"(!!!!) and if it does not arrive by november 5th (estimated arrival was october 21st) I should contact again. And then what? wait another month for the book not to arrive?

Apparently Amazon does not require returning customers any longer and they'd rather screw over every customer and get their money once.

One thing's for sure, I'm never going to order Amazon again. The mere fact that they do not offer detailed tracking (of package location) for international shipments and then demand a "several week" grace period for shipments that were paid to arrive within two weeks.

If you've got Amazon stocks, this would be the time to get rid of them, their future looks far from bright.

I have a charge from amazon.com, I don't know what is for. But I can't talk to a billing department. They are investigating by e-mail!!!!!!!!!!! They can see that I didn't order anything with that price. But He said it will take 1-2 weeks to get back with me.
I sent complaint to customer service but it was a joke. I hate them now. I used to buy many books from them but now I will never ever do that.

After quite a few sales and good feedback I found out that some of the products were defective and i did not know how many....so i canceled my listings and current orders until i could evealutae what was happening (thought i did the right thing)..AMAZON closed my account for too many orders canceled... They will not even discuss it... said they will hold my money for 90 days in case of claims and BYE..

I think i will start a new auction site... really...

I have to agree 100% that Amazon sucks. I learned a valuable lesson. Bought a Xmas item for daughter "free shipping". Actually what they do is add the shipping in the price and I fell for it. I found the same item at Target a week later and funniest thing, it was the same price less the shipping. When I returned it, they tried to make me pay double shipping to return it. I had to fight with them. You cannot call anyone, you cannot respond to their email. I also STUPIDLY (yes, I agree) clicked on something just to see their shipping policies and then "x" out of it. Next thing I know I have another shipment coming and you "cannot change or cancel order". What a nightmare. I will NEVER NEVER NEVER buy anything from them again. Way too many legitimate e-retailers out there who treat you honestly to ever even have to consdier going to Amazon.com again. But I'm probably preaching to the choir here.

I tried to order a cell phone with a contract extension twice on Amazon because they had the best deal for the phone I want. For some reason, they frozed my account the first time and when I call to try to fix it but they told me they need to contact my bank to get authorization for the purchase. What I did not understand was able to charge my card since the price of the phone is a penny and I had a couple of thousand dollars in my account. I tried to give them the info they need when I called but they told me that they will have someone contact me within the next 24 hours to take care of this. When I didn't hear from anyone, I sent them an email and they next day I received an email stating that they cancelled my account. I set up a new account and tried to order it again but I seem to be having the same problem. Maybe it would be worth paying the $150 for it for this much hassle. At least then I would have had my new phone the next day.

I have recently ordered two video games and a CD of amazon (I do not live within the UK so they need to ship this abroad) and was happy to see that it was dispatched within 10 hours of the time I purcahsed the items. I have chosen the cheaper shipping because the more expensive shipping which supposedly takes about a day or two to get to people is incredibly overpriced! It is expected to be at my house around 13th May 2009. I myself have never had any problems using amazon. However I would never use a third party delivery service...I would only ever buy things from the actual Amazon.com... not anything else! if the item I want to buy is not available to be sold by amazon I wouldnt bother!

Well they've done it to me yet another time. It's often enough that I decided to mention it this time. I order 2 books that are "in stock" and choose free shipping, only to discover later in an email that they've chosen to not ship them for more than 3 weeks after I ordered them. I've been telling all the people I know about this practice, with the intent to reduce Amazon's business (although I'm realistic enough to know that it's probably futile).

It is clear (obvious) that they are intentionally punishing anybody who chooses free shipping. I believe that this is because they are overcharging for shipping and that is a significant revenue stream for them.
